It was another day for collected seaweeds, this time in Lagoa de Óbidos, in Foz do Arelho. In these calm waters it was possible to collect several taxa, among which the outstanding sea lettuce (Ulva sp.), of extraordinary dimensions, with some reaching about 60-80 cm, and the slender wart weed (Gracilaria gracilis), presenting much more modest dimensions.
The last one, when fresh, has a pleasant marine-earthy odor, somewhat similar to dehydrated mushrooms. This can be used in salads or used in the confection of sauces; for example, vinaigrettes. When it dries develops a unpleasant aroma similar to decomposing fish, however, its flour can be used in a range of bakery products, from breads to crackers.
